PACIFIC NORTHWEST DRILL TEAM ASSOCIATION

PROPOSED PACIFIC NORTHWEST DRILL TEAM ASSOCIATION COMPETITION CRITERIA

The annual competition of PNWDTA will be held in August at a place and time determined by the membership at the annual meeting. Bids for location and dates will be presented to all member teams and individuals at least a month prior to the annual meeting, and voted upon at the annual meeting.

Teams must be current members of PNWDTA to compete at the annual competition. Each team would pay an event entry fee of $50 ($30 ??) per event they wished to enter.

Scoring: Because the majority of equestrian drill teams in the area proposed currently belong to either WLRCA or OWDTA, the scoring systems and score sheets currently being used by these associations will be used, as adapted for use by PNWDTA.

Judges: PNWDTA will recognize drill team judges approved by WLRCA, OWDTA, MSDTA, and will endeavor to card its own judges in the future. At least two, and preferably three, judges will be used at the annual competition.

Events: Events may include, but are not limited to the following: Parade, Compulsory, Short Program, Free Style, Quad, Impromptu, Specialty Drill, Rodeo Flag Team and Color Guard competitions.

Definition of Events:
Parade: A competition in which teams are judged on how they perform maneuvers in a parade setting—preferably in a street type format. If a street is not available, the arena can be marked off to simulate a street. (Inspection may or may not be combined with this event. Inspection is very time consuming and is often better left out.)

Compulsory: A competition in which a drill having a set pattern and proscribed spacing and music would be performed by a minimum of riders (8 ?) from each participating team.

Short Program: A competition in which certain required maneuvers or types of maneuvers would be put together in a free-style format, and having a time frame of not less than 4 nor more than 6 minutes. A list of required maneuvers in the order they are being performed must be submitted for each judge.

Free-Style: A competition in which anything goes, no requirements other than it must be performed under a specified time limit (10-12 minutes) and no outside items such as jumps may be brought into the arena.

Quad: A mini free style for four riders with a time limit of 4 minutes. Themes and costumes allowed and encouraged.

Impromptu: A competition in which a team is given a list of 12 to 15 maneuvers. The list is given to them they arrive on the competition grounds (Friday), or mailed to them one week prior to the competition, and they have to put together a drill in free style format and perform it on the last day of the competition (Sunday). They must list the maneuvers in the same manner in which maneuvers are listed for Short Program.

Specialty Drill: A competition in which the unusual is the norm. Examples could include: a square dance drill, a drill incorporating jumps, a drill with period costuming or other specialty type act such as a driving team. Judged on the same order as free style with same time limit.

Rodeo Flag Team: A competition in which the team will do a short drill and flag presentation similar to the sponsor flag introduction at a rodeo. Each rider must carry a flag. Teams will enter and do a short drill and finish in positions or points for a grand entry serpentine. Total routine should not exceed 6 minutes.

Color Guard: A competition with a minimum of four riders in which the U.S. (or Canadian) and at least one state (or province) flag must be carried. Correct flag protocol must be observed. Procedure should simulate the presentation of the colors at a rodeo or other function.

Awards: A Champion will be named for each event. Total points scored will determine the champion team. Total points in four (5 or 6??) events, one of which must be Free-Style, will be used to determine the Overall Champion. Teams who enter more than four events will use their highest scoring events (or must choose prior to competition the four they wish to count toward the Over-all.)
