IMPROMPTU DRILL COMPETITION CRITERIA

NUMBER OF RIDERS:  Any number of riders allowed.

TIME:  Time allowed shall be not more than five (5) minutes (maximum) allowed for completion of the drill.  Time will be taken from first horse in to last horse out.

MUSIC:  Music of choice.  Points will be scored on how appropriate the music was to maneuvers performed,
and the pace the horses set versus the pace of the music.

MANEUVERS:
A: Maneuvers for the Impromptu Drill Competition will be drawn on Saturday morning preceding
the beginning of the competition.  The judges for the competition will conduct the draw.  The
 Impromptu Drill Competition will be held on Saturday evening.
 
 B: Ten (10) maneuvers shall be drawn.

 C:  Each competing team may submit up to three (3) maneuvers.  Maneuvers must be able to be
performed by a minimum of eight (8) riders.  Duplicate maneuvers submitted will be eliminated.
If additional maneuvers are needed, they will be drawn at random from the list in the current
WLRCA Handbook.  Maneuvers drawn may not be the same as the current list of Additional
Maneuvers for the Short Program Drill.

 D:    Teams may use additional maneuvers to connect the required maneuvers in setting up their drill.
  No penalty will be given for the extra maneuvers as long as the team does not go over the allotted
  time limit of five (5) minutes.

5:    EXPLANATON SHEET:  Each team participating is required to submit a list of their maneuvers (required and
        additional) in the order they appear in their drill.  They must submit a copy for each judge.
6:    JUDGING CRITERIA:  Teams will be judged on:
 How maneuvers are incorporated into a smooth working drill--to include all required maneuvers
performed;
 Execution of the drill--to include alignment, spacing, timing, coordination, and briskness;
 Performance and manners of horses;
 Originality and uniqueness of presentation;
 Spectacularity and crowd appeal--to include flag usage and presentation, suitability of music to
  maneuvers performed, and pace of the drill to the music.
 
7:   PRACTICE OF IMPROMPTU DRILL:  Practice of a team's Impromptu Drill will be limited to practice on
"human" foot only, except for the "on deck" time immediately prior to the performance of the drill.

II:   EXECUTION OF DRILL:  40 points possible.

     (10)  Alignment:  Lines straight, properly aligned, both vertically and horizontally;  circles evenly round
and centered in the arena;  Are the pairs/fours even side to side?  Do the riders track directly behind
the rider in front?

     (10)  Spacing:  The maintaining of a uniform distance between all horses throughout and entire maneuver.
Spacing may vary in succeeding maneuvers depending upon the requirements of the maneuver
being performed.

     (10)  Timing and Coordination:  How the team members work together to perform the maneuvers.
No missed holes, collisions, etc.
 
     (10)  Briskness:  Precise execution, alertness, and overall attitude of the team.

III:  PERFORMANCE AND MANNERS OF HORSES:  20 points possible.

     (10)  Performance of horses:  Way of going;  no broken gaits.

     (10)  Manners of horses:    Well mannered;  suitability as a drill horse, no biting or kicking.

IV:  ORIGINALITY AND UNIQUENESS OF PRESENTATION:  25 points possible.

     (10)  Originality:  Original maneuvers or combinations of maneuvers used to fill the requirements.

     (15)  Uniqueness of Presentation:  New and different ways to present the required maneuvers.

V:  SPECTACULARITY AND CROWD APPEAL:  30 points possible.

Spectacularity:  Precision not to be sacrificed for speed, but speed to be noted because it is
more difficult to perform a maneuver well at a faster tempo;  also liveliness and energy to
compliment the music and patterns.

Crowd appeal:  Drill performed in a manner pleasing to an audience; crowd appeal can include
the manner in which flags are presented and suitability and tempo of music to the maneuvers.

VI:  GENERAL IMPRESSION:  10 points possible.

Horses clean, in healthy working condition; no penalty for teams of mixed colors;  equipment
clean, neat, uniform and in good repair;  uniforms clean, neat, uniform, and in good repair.

VII:  PENALTIES:

 BROKEN TACK AND/OR DROPPED FLAG:  Tack will include hats, leg bands, tail bows, pennants,
 etc., anything that has fallen to the ground, or makes it necessary to stop to repair it.

 FALL OF HORSE AND/OR RIDER:
 Fall as a result of a collision between two or more horses        Each Occurrence -25 points_____________
 
 Fall not resulting from a collision    Each Occurrence -2 points_____________

 OVER ALLOTTED TIME LIMIT:  Time allowed is not more than five (5) minutes.  Time is taken from
 the first horse in to the last horse out.
                Each minute or fraction thereof over -2 points____________

 RE-GROUP/OFF COURSE:  Re-grouping will be done under extenuating circumstances,
 such as the fall of a horse or rider, severe tack breakage,  or medical emergency.  Off-course is
 defined as a major pert of the team being out of position or having lost its organization as opposed
 to one or two riders being out of line.  Should a team be unable to continue at the present time for
either of these circumstances, they may ask the timekeeper for permission to re-group.  They may
halt their drill and re-start the drill from any points in the drill for a one time penalty of 5 points.
Should they be unable to continue, due to injury to horse or rider, they may ask for permission to
leave the arena and return at the end of the draw to complete their drill.  In this case all time and
deductions will remain.
